Greg is definitely a “local”. Born and raised in Walnut Creek, he attended Las Lomas High School, then on to Sacramento State where he was a member of the Hornets golf team. He then transferred to Saint Mary’s College after receiving a scholarship to play on the Gaels golf team. After completing his BA degree in Spanish he gave professional golf a try, playing in a few events on the Golden State Tour, California Tour, and the Pepsi Tour. He went back to school for his teaching credential in Spanish, and taught at Piedmont High School and Middle School for a total of 5 years where he also coached boys basketball, girls volleyball, and golf from the middle school to varsity levels. He taught at Alhambra High School for one year, was the manager of a local scuba store for two years, then came back to the teaching profession and joined SVMS in the 2003-2004 school year. Greg also holds a Tier 1 Administrative Credential, and a Master of Science degree in Educational Leadership.
Outside of teaching Greg is the owner of Phillips’ School of Diving and Adventure where he teaches scuba diving, CPR, and First Aid and leads scuba trips around the world. He also holds a US Coast Guard 100 Ton boat captain's license and drives the Escapade and the Beach Hopper 2 for scuba divers in Monterey. Greg enjoys photographing the outdoors and loves to travel, hike, and camp with his wife and son. He also holds a black belt in Jujitsu and Judo, and is currently studying the art of Aikido.
