About Mrs. Russell

I am often asked why I teach middle school. Honestly, I cannot imagine teaching any other age. Middle school teaching keeps one young at heart. I get to continue to learn and enjoy the challenge of not taking myself too seriously.

A brief bit about me. Some time ago, I spent nearly ten years as a corporate publicist. Prior to this experience, I worked as a radio disc jockey for two radio stations. I aired football games for WBAA at my alma mater, Purdue University, and later had a Top 40 Show for a California station.  At one point in my life, I helped produce television commercials in Southern California and once worked as a “hand model” much like George on the sitcom Seinfeld. Random, I know…but it paid well.

My experience in education began years ago when I moved to the Bay Area and helped to develop a writing program called Writing for Mastery for the Lafayette Arts and Sciences Foundation at Stanley Middle School. I discovered I loved teaching others so I substitute taught for a while then pursued elementary and secondary teaching credentials from CSUEB. That’s when I came to Stone Valley; this is my sixth year here.

On a personal note, I have been married for many years and have three daughters. The oldest two are graduates of UC Davis and UC Berkeley; the youngest is a junior at The University of Texas in Austin. You may have seen my oldest daughter on television during summer, 2010  on the reality show Expedition Impossible. She competed in Morocco as a member of Team California Girls. One never knows what one’s child will grow up and do!

In my spare time I like to play tennis, read, and travel. In fact, this past summer I traveled to Europe and to San Diego to visit my middle daughter who is pursuing graduate studies to obtain certification as a Nurse Practitioner. What a place to study…do not know how she does it. I love everything about her place…the waves, the sea gulls, snorkeling with the seals!

It is a great time to begin middle school. To that end, I offer the following advice: enjoy the journey. Don’t rush it. There is a season for all things and right now you are planted here at Stone Valley. Find interests, cultivate friendships, and give to others. You are going to do great. You… are ready for this new beginning.
