James Purcell

I was born in Morristown, New Jersey in 1956 and was raised in Woodside, California. I graduated from Bellarmine College Preparatory in San Jose in 1974 and then attended UC Berkeley on an athletic scholarship to play water polo for the Golden Bears winning 2 NCAA championships while at CaI. graduated in 1978 with a BS degree in Social Science.

After my college experiences I entered the business world serving as a salesman/manager for 11 years working and living in Australia, New York City, Alaska, San Francisco, and Laguna Beach procuring seafood products for Purcell International--a family owned import/export company.

In 1990 I chose to leave the business sector and enrolled at St. Mary's College obtaining my teaching credential in the spring of 1992. I began my teaching career at Palm Springs High School where I taught English, History, and coached swimming and water polo from 1992-1996. I then moved to Oregon where I found my age group niche teaching Language Arts at Ogden Middle School in Oregon City from 1996-2000. I returned to the East Bay in the summer of 2000 and was hired to teach Core here at Stone Valley Middle School. I  coached the Monte Vista High School en's water polo team from 2000 to 2008.

I reside in Danville with my wife Maureen, daughter Kelly, and our two Australian labradoodles named Coogee & Curlee. We own, and have operated, Diablo Water Polo for the past 12 years. We also enjoy traveling, camping and swimming with 'spinner dolphins' in Hawaii!!
